There are a few limitations on novices as far as getting to the point of successfully eventing. It can be done if you manage your money properly, but if you want to make money in anything other than Gym (which is totally random, and can be done by anyone, novice OR sponsor), you'll need to get a person who is a sponsor involved.
-Novices can't train very efficiently. They lack the training skills that sponsors have, and where a sponsor might have a horse ready to event by 6 years old, a novice might not be able to finish the same horse before it hits 20. So to have a horse that's competitive in events, you'll need a sponsor to event train for you.
-You WILL need tack and shoes. You can either buy those from the market, or look for an event trainer that includes tack with the training costs.
-You'll also need an NPC. Without riding skill, you won't be able to successfully event horses with "yourself" as a rider. You can find NPCs on the Items market too- just make sure they're already leveled to 127, since novices can't train NPCs either.
-Make sure you choose bonuses that will help in your chosen event. Novices are limited to 5 bonuses, but if you're careful about your choices, 5 is plenty. Avoid the breeding bonuses- those won't be of any use in eventing. Stick with Tenacious Trainer and its associated bonuses- that Longevity can really come in handy.
-Once the horse is event trained and has tack, novices and sponsors are pretty even when it comes to actual events. There are plenty of sponsor players that transfer their trained horses to novice ranches to event them.
-Many event trainers include information on what to do as you event, how to train between turns, what diet, etc, so be sure to read any notes they give you carefully and follow their advice.
