Question about renewing sponsor accounts

My sponsor ranch is only a couple of months old, so I do not need to worry about renewing it any time soon... but I happen to have extra money right now and was curious whether or not you can pay ahead of time and get 12 more months tacked onto the time you already have left.
Can I pay now while I have 10 months left and end up with 22 months? Or if I renewed now would it be a waste of money because it would start over at 12 months now??
I would really love to know, so please reply if you have the answer. Thanks!

It just adds an extra year to the expiry date, so if it's due to expire in '09, upgrading will make it due to expire on the same date in 2010.
