Why are open events bad for young horses? I really don't see the difference?

Because older horses can enter them, and they'll eat the young horses for breakfast. Say you enter an open gaited event with an 8 year old. The optimum is age 14. This means potentially, a 13 or 14 year old horse will enter. Unless you're magical, your 8 year old can't win.

Unless you mean when you see the word "open" in green. That just means a horse of any discipline can enter. When people say "open events" on here, they mean zero restrictions. The zero restrictions scenario is the one I outlined above.
