People get around this by using a name brand though. Take, for example, the name Zenyatta. After her wins, everyone wanted a Zenyatta horse. Plain old "Zenyatta" was taken. So people put something in front of it like (in my case) AT which is my ranch brand. So my horses name is AT Zenyatta, denoting her as a horse from my stables AND allowing me to use the Zenyatta name. Make sense?
