Choctaw Indian Ponies

The Choctaw Indian Pony was a colorful horse adored by the Choctaw tribe. They were loyal, athletic, and beautiful. The majority of Choctaw ponies were born gaited, due to their Spanish horse ancestors. This enabled them to carry their riders long distances in comfort.
This horse was a vital aspect in everyday Choctaw life.
However, in an attempt to make forcing the Indians onto reservations easier, the US military ordered the extermination of each and every Indian pony. All around the country, ponies were slaughtered, or herds replaced with non-Choctaw stallions.
The Americans had thought they won. Little did they know, several Indians had kept their ponies, and were keeping them in small pockets of their reservations. Through careful breeding and conservation, the hardy breed has survived to this day.
