name uniqueness

When you search for horses in marketplace, if you type in a name, it searches that exact phrase right? So since most people put their stable brand in front of the horses name, you aren't going to get any results. :? Is there anyway for me to find out if there is already a horse with a name i want to use?

Type in the exact same name you want to use and see if something pops up. If not, then you can use the name depending on if VHR finds it unique or not.
Or maybe buy an unnamed horse and name it. :)
Now known as Viper on the forums.

Yeah, but if someone has a horse named MDR's Oops I Peed My Pants [for example] then I don't want to name my horse Foxcliff's Oops I Peed My Pants. However, if search the horses for that name, I won't know that MDR named their horse that as well. Do you see what I'm saying?
When you name a horse, VHR identifies whether or not it is unique? I did not know this. Is it based on an exact match or would it prevent the above described situation from happening?

You used to be able to choose between exact search and partial search, however it was too much of a strain on the server. So now we only have exact.

That aside who cares if there's multiple Opps I peed my pants on vhr. Duplicate names happen in real life too. The only difference of course being the brand.

No, you're right, it's not that big of a deal. The reason I ask is because since I'm pretty new around here, I'm not familiar with many of the horses that are well known for their accomplishments. I wouldn't want to inadvertently copy a well known horse's name, because well, IMO that just looks bad.

Well, you can take a look in the showcase/brag section of the forums. There are two threads there that might help you avoid that to some degree. Top Disciplines, and Highest earners by breed. It wont guarantee you don't dup a well known horses name but it should help a bit.
