gym eventing question

I ken gymkhanna is random and all, and horses basically just have to be leveled. but just wondering though, is there a specific npc that needs to be used, or do I ride it (I don't have any riding skills though, just training, horsemanship...vet, farrier, breeding all that stuff) Also, is there any tack that needs to go on the horse? I believe it's a western rider, and tack is not needed.

Actually any rider will do. I normally use myself cause well, I'm lazy

Whether tack is on or off doesn't matter either
