I am a novice and I have a Standardbred stallion I want event trained in Harness racing. Can I train him myself with a guide or will it not work??

Unfortunately novices can't train. With a sponsor account you get skills and training skills are part of these, without these skills the stats don't increase quickly enough and the horse can't be trained.
A novice can roll though (and tweak already trained horses).
I suggest you read this poston making money and then use the money you make to get a sponsor to event train the horse for you, it'll be worth it.
