Gaining levels with eventing?

So, I know that you can gain level by eventing a horse. I was wondering do you gain as you enter the horse into the event? Or do you gain after the event is run and completed?

I think it is once the event is completed.

I think someone said that the experience you got was the horses competition score x 10.
