What is the difference with the new updates?

What is the difference with the new updates?

I have gone for about a month and a half and while I was gone the updates happened. What I understand is that if you dont have certain bonus's then your horses fail in events. Can someone clarify the whole bonus thing for me and explain how you can can levels? Thanks.
