Why do some events not run? Do the sponsors hosting it have to activate it or something?

yes you have to activate/run it or after about 4 days or so the OPs will do it.

For you to run events, the event needs to be older than 1 day, and have more than 10 entrants.

Have a read of this post as to when Ops will run or delete events and under what conditions:
