eventing help

Postby elise:) » Sun Oct 19, 2008 6:43 pm

I've hijacked this forum, but what can I say, I have a lot of questions.

Anyway. I am about to start my first attempt at event training and if all goes well, eventing. I'm going to be doing one of my Belgians in Driving.

I've done a lot of research on event training and feel I have compiled a good plan for that, but I haven't really seen a whole lot on actual eventing, so I still have some questions.

Does your horse lose energy when they are run in an event? If so, how much is lost? How many events, that they are entered in, can run before they need to be turned? Should I continue to train while the horse is eventing, or will that use up too much of the horse's energy?
Basically, I need help figuring out how to go about entering events. Should I start at a specific age? Should I enter as many as I can or only a certain number?

Anyone have any other tips for me in addition to the questions I posted?
thanks :)

No, when horses events are run, they do not lose any energy. It does not affect them.

Horses can only be entered in four events per day/turn.

You should continue to train while the horses is eventing. If you don't, your horse will fall behind and will not be able to compete with the horses who have higher stats.

When you start eventing your horse is up to you. I mainly do dressage, but am experimenting with other disciplines. I usually start around two years before optimum age.

So there is no limit on how many events can run per turn?

Nope. You just can't enter more than 4 events per turn ;)

You may only enter 4 events a turn, but if you entered 12+ at let the horse sit, there is no limit to how many events can run.

Sooo.... [this is the gears in my head turning, trying to process] wouldn't it be ideal to aim to get a horse event trained in an hour or so, entering 4 events per turn [once your horse is 2, or whatever the min. age to enter is] until you entered all the ones posted and pray that none of them run until you've aged your horse to the point you want it to start eventing?
Seems like otherwise, if you wait until the horse is older, say 7 or 8 to start entering events, you may run out of turns [not literally, as they are infinite, but meaning you dont want to age the horse anymore atm] before you've entered all the posted events. if that make any sense at all.
I'm just trying to scheme out how i can enter the most events possible ergo make the most mulah possible.

like would it be better to enter a bunch of events and let them run when the horse is below optimum age and then after that enter 4 each turn and wait till they run to turn the horse. Or would it be better to enter a bunch of events and keep turning the horse until it's at optimum age and then let it sit and wait for all of those to run?

That's exactly what most people do :)
I train showmanship horses, and the optimum age for the is 8.
So when the horse is about 5, I start entering 4 events each time I turn,
then I get the horse completely finished and let them sit at like 7ish while their events run. Then I enter them in 4 more events, turn, wait, so forth :)
